Sperm meets egg. It's how life begins for us all.

From that first moment, your cells immediately start dividing and multiplying. It is the beginning of a complicated and amazing process. Is it the beginning of everything--the beginning of you.

One of the the first things you developed as an embryo was a very time stalk: your spinal cord. At the top of that spinal cord, there was a little hump: your brain. The area where these two essential parts meet--the brain's connection to the spinal cord--is known as your brain stem.

You then developed a network of nerves branching out to every tissue of your growing body. Heart, liver, kidneys, lungs--everything. Those nerves were how your brain would communicate with your body throughout it's development and for the rest of your life; it's how your body knows how to do everything it will ever need to do. And every one of those nerves begins its journey by leaving the brain and passing through the brain stem.

When I was in school, they taught us that over 450 million nerve fibers travelled through the brain stem. That seemed like an awfully big number to me.

They were wrong. Now, we know that number is closer to 7 TRILLION.
